Amending a Tax Return |
|
|
I have to amend My taxes from 2009, 2010, and 2011 to include an additional deduction I neglected to include on my schedule A's for those years.
It's my understanding that I need to fill out a separate 1040X for each of those years along with a new schedule A (with the changed deductions). Is this correct? I don't need to submit any other documents, right?

It can happen to anyone. You've collected all your tax return information. You've gathered all your W-2s, 1099s, receipts and statements. You've crunched the numbers, doubled checked your calculations and mailed the return or used an eFile provider.

It happens to the best of us. You gather all your tax documents, crunch the numbers, and double check everything on the tax return. No sooner have you dropped the return in the mail or pressed the efile button, but a new W2 or 1099 comes in the mail. Ah, now you remember. And now you need to revise your tax return.
Revising your tax return is done by filing an amendment. You need to use Form 1040X, along with a new Form 1040, plus any other necessary schedules and forms. Amended tax returns have to be mailed to the IRS on paper for manual processing. The IRS typically processes an amended return about 8 to 12 weeks, but this process can take longer during the IRS's busiest times.

f you're filing a tax return for the current year and anticipate tax refunds from the original and amended returns, then delay sending in the 1040X. You should wait until you receive your tax refund either by check or deposited into your bank account. Once you receive the refund, send the 1040X. The IRS sends another tax refund for the difference listed on the amended tax return after the 1040X is processed.

Yes, correct. I had to do a 1040X for 2011, BTDT. Don't forget to update your CA State Tax form, that can get you a good sized refund as well.

You use the amendment process to correct a mistake or omission on your tax return. To dispute the facts or the law you use the objection process. For example, if you disagree with your income tax assessment and want to dispute it, you need to lodge an objection to it.
