Robots to Replace Fast Food Workers? |
|
|
As protesters across the country call for the fast-food chains to raise their wages, a number of companies have begun experimenting with new technology that could significantly reduce the number of restaurant workers in the years to come.
Restaurant industry backers warn that a sharp rise in wages would be counterproductive, increasing the appeal of automation and putting more workers at risk of job loss.
"Faced with a $15 wage mandate, restaurants have to reduce the cost of service," blared an ad in The Wall Street Journal last year from the Employment Policies Institute, which supports corporate interests. "That means fewer entry-level jobs and more automated alternatives -- even in the kitchen."

Perhaps you heard about the fast food workers which had gotten together spanning several different major quick service restaurant chains and decided to strike in November and December of 2012 right during the peak season of holiday traffic. These workers had claimed that they didn't have a union to protect them, they weren't paid enough, and the working conditions just weren't fair. On the CNBC financial news many free-market economists and business owners simply stated; "if they don't like the working conditions or the pay, they should quit."

Factory work is some of the best alternative employment for the hard struck, around. Replacing with robots is a spit in the face.
Not all countries can afford... a lavish monarchy.

Minimum wage jobs are a great way for young workers to learn skills, work ethic, and learn about earnings money, paying taxes, etc. And it is a good source of inexpensive labor for businesses that need low-skilled tasks performed.
But when the low-skilled workers make the situation miserable for businesses - high pay, healthcare, paid vacation, strikes, absences - then business will find better ways to have those tasks performed. Commonly, low-skilled repetitive jobs are the easiest to automate. And once a business has spent the $250,000 to $500,000 to invent and build the automation machines, the jobs will never return. The machines can work 24 hrs, 7 days - no healthcare, no absences, no strikes. The protestors need to consider the longterm consequences of their actions - once they kill the golden goose, it won't be returning.

I need a human to make my Big Mac.
Seriously though, it's sad to see the rich getting richer and companies not wanting to pay anyone a livable wage.
