Save 15% to 20% of your net income in the S&P 500 and you should be alright. What specific areas are thinking of investing in?

When to begin? "Now" or earlier, if you have a time machine.

How to prepare for retirement? Spend less than you earn, and invest the rest.

One last item: Don't borrow money, except maybe to buy a house. Oldguy will debate me on this last point, as he espouses leveraging your investments with low-percentage debt. I don't have the risk tolerance to follow his method.

Right on Wino... Best time to start planning: 20 years ago. 2nd best time: now.

It is increasingly important for people who haven't planned to get started now. In my opinion, there are opportunities now for the non-planners that may not be around in ten years.

Agreeing with earlier posts, start now.

Also take advantage of employer matches (free money).

Be sure to do some research - not all retirement plans are created equal. Some custodians will destroy your returns with fees. I just read somewhere that the average household will spend $155,000 on retirement plan fees in their lifetime. That's money that could be earning more money!

Not if you invest with Vanguard. My expense ratios with Vanguard are .05% too .17% on my index funds. That is very low.

Hi, Firstly you have to set up goal for retirement.Instead, you will have to depend on how skillfully you plan and invest, and whether you make good use of tax-advantaged savings or not.
