I don't get into "SEO" much with all the crazy algo changes and all. But I'd say the first steps are targeting the right keywords. This just makes sense whether it be SEO or just in general - because you are using and incorporating the actual terms that people are thinking and searching with to find the information you have to offer them.

SEO isn't dead and it will never die. I'm really not sure why people say this.
In most cases it's because they are doing it wrong. They don't get the basic premises and they overkill the optimization.
- keyword stuffing (when you over optimize content for one keyword)
- duplicate content ( having the same content on two or more different web pages)
- keyword cannibalization (that happens when two or more web pages "compete" for the same keyword)
