I would start by opening a stock account on-line or by calling them at either Fidelity (800) 343-3548 or Vanguard (877) 662-7447. They are the two major no-load brokers.
And then purchase Spiders, the stick symbol is SPY. The current price per share is about $215, you can buy a single share - or any number of shares depending on how much you want to invest.

And the second thing to do is buy the $15 book - The Little Book of Common Sense Investing. It tells you, in simple terms, how the Market works and how best to approach it. (The author is the founder of Vanguard). It's a small book, takes only a few hours to read - you'll appreciate how well it summarizes the key points.

What are you majoring in?

Oldguy, can you compare SPY with SWPPX? Are all S&P 500 index funds alike, or not?

The SP500 funds are the same at 'gross" - the differences are the expense ratios and fees. And they are all pretty close, they are direct competitors so if one company charged much more that the others they would soon go out of business. Scwab's 0.09% fee is about as low as any.

Thanks!

Although, since I have 25% of my 401k already invested in an S&P 500 index fund, it occurs to me that having the same in my regular taxable brokerage account probably isn't worthwhile.

I know that there are many tools that facilitate trade forex for beginners. For example, binary option signals, I often testing a different signal services on a demo account to ensure their profitability and utility. I know that many people simply copy successful deals of other traders and make money on it. There are different ways how to trade in binary options. There are more simple ways, there are more complex. But I believe that everything can be learned. The main thing is desire.

No, the main thing is luck. Remember, ALL of the services that you & others site is based on HISTORY. And the markets do not move on history, they move on events that are yet to happen. There is no one or no way to project the future - altho 1000s of books, systems purport to do it. But in truth, the market can go up up or down (binary) - and you have a 50/50 chance of being right on your next trade.
I became wealthy by applying intellectual honesty, not wishes, not coin flips, yada.

Unless you come from money, you’ll probably be starting from scratch and that’s ok. Many of us have to start small – myself included. Begin by determining how much you want to invest.

I would change that to "begin by determining how much you want to accumulate".

Eg, say that you want to have $2,000,0000, 30 years from now. You can back-calculate that, it would take $754/m invested at 11%/yr (the long-term US Market Average).

The first step towards stock trading is you must be fully equipped with KNOWLEDGE. I've found some helpful articles here regarding Forex, CFD, Stocks and Shares.
