While there are a lot of "tips" and even opinions or preferences offered, most successful investors and advisors should agree with the following key elements for most investors:
-Select diversified funds (e.g. ETFs)
-Keep expense ratios low (cost of funds)
-Choose an appropriate fund allocation (e.g. stocks types, bond duration)
-Set up auto-deposits (dollar cost averaging can equal less expensive investing)
-Leverage technology (e.g. tax loss harvesting, automatic rebalancing)
-Focus on long-term investing (avoid short-term withdrawals)
-Incorporate appropriate tax advantaged accounts (e.g. Roth IRA)
While some of these choices may seem daunting or overwhelming, having a competent and caring advisor for a low fee can be very helpful and even prudent.
