The S&P BSE Sensex pared most of its morning gains after climbing as much as 230 points in the initial trading session on Monday.
Selling in the index heavyweights such as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Sun Pharmaceuticals and Infosys led the retreat.
the 30-share index was at 29,180.37, up 84.44 points or 0.29 per cent. It touched a high of 29325.35 and a low of 29150.67 in trade today.
The NSE's benchmark index was trading 0.3 per cent higher at 8830. It touched a high of 8870.10 and a low of 8815.25 in trade today.
Tracking the momentum, the 50-share Nifty index also cut some of the gains after surging as much as 50 points in the early morning trades. It fell below its psychological level of 8,850.
