My education tax options  Reply with quote

Hi,
I just received a w2 for my taxable tuition reimbursement for grad school paid by my employer. No tax has been withheld from this w2 form. Can I claim a education tax credit on the tuition paid to my school even though I didn't write the actual check to the school (my employer did)? It is considered income, so, to me at least, it seems to be the equivalent situation of me being given the amount of tuition as a bonus (for example) in my regular wages then going to the school myself and writing a personal check for tuition costs. In this situation, as I have in the past during undergrad, I could claim a lifetime learning credit. Now I'm not sure.
In addition, can I claim the amount paid to the school as a regular deduction as a business expense? I'm so confused.
Finally, is the drive to school considered a business expense being that it is a requirement by my employer? Or is this simply a commute? Hope this all makes sense. If not, I will further clarify.
Any help is appreciated.

You might look over IRS Pub 970 sections 11 and 12.

I think the amount would be definitely added to assignmentdone.co.uk your credit. But you know what I am also not sure but as much as I know it should be added to your credit. Hope you get the answer.
