Oregon - no sales tax?  Reply with quote

Hi,

I have read that in Oregon no sales tax is added to the purchase of goods or services. Does that mean that there is actually no tax i.e. goods should be cheaper there than, say CA, or that the tax is already incorporated into the price of goods? I guess what I'm really asking is : Is it cheaper to shop in Oregon than other States?

I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.

Hi John,

Oregonian here--grew up in CA and moved north in 2011.

It is cheaper here. Tax is not incorporated into prices because, well, there's just no sales tax. Prices are not inflated to adjust for this, which is what I think you're asking. A $1200 Macbook pro in California is $1200 here, too--only without tax. Our out of state family takes advantage of this when they come up to visit. We have higher property taxes and lower average income than CA, but I've found it to not be a balancing factor. We feel as though we've ended up ahead overall by moving here.

You can't get around it with certain things, though (e.g. a car or luxury item purchase). Things that have a title will likely be subjected to the tax of your state when you go to register it.
