Yomiuri Shimbun
Ninety-five of 100 major companies believe the domestic economy has been recovering or has just entered a recovery phase, according to a survey conducted by The Yomiuri Shimbun from late March to early April.
The figure is much larger than the 59 companies that gave the same answers in the last survey, carried out in September, indicating that companies' business confidence has been improving steadily.
Behind the rosier business sentiment is an increase in companies' profits and in capital investment.
Asked when the recovery would move into top gear, 53 companies said this would happen by the latter half of 2004. Some said the economy had already got firmly on the recovery track.
But asked to cite causes for concern from a range of choices from which they could pick as many as they liked, 55 companies said they were concerned about the yen's strength against the dollar. The Japanese currency rose to 103 yen against the greenback in early April. Other main concerns were deterioration of overseas economies, cited by 51 firms, and sluggish personal consumption (43).
