Ha ha ... I've heard that excuse myself. Laughing And it's just an excuse, really. Evil or Very Mad

I put in to attend a seminar and got the same excuse. The next day my boss drove in with a new company car, a Porsche 911!!! Needless to say I quit and started my own business the next day.

LOL one time I asked my dad for a day off and he told me to work for some one else so I did!!!

Went on an interview for a generic advert and was telemarketing before the sun went down.

Didn't seem like work until I discovered that the people could get the product much cheaper if they just ordered it from the incerts in the magazine.

Went from being fun to being a drugery because I felt like I was ripping people off.

I find that jobs that want good help and want people to actually stay take it upon themselves to pay more than minimum wage anyway.

A pizza place can pay minimum wage because it takes all of 15minutes to train another highschool kid how to read the pizza-make chart that tells them how much cheese, pepperoni, and toppings to put on a small, medium, and large pizza. (I know because I worked at a pizza place for 2 years in high school, another for a year in college, and even worked part-time at one in my early 20's to save up for an engagement ring for my wife.)

There are people I suppose due to travel restrictions, legal status, age, etc that have no choice but to work for minimum wage and I feel for those folks. But I do not think many "career" type jobs pay minimum wage in most cases as the turn-over would be too high.

The plant I work at has some jobs with 6 months or even a full year training periods before most employees are skilled enough to be released as "qualified." We cannot deal with high rates of turn-over and thus the lowest paying job in the plant is $9.00 with more skilled jobs paying between $14 and $18. If we did not pay this much, the skilled slashing and weaving technicians would go somewhere else.

Nishima is right on target. It all comes down to value like any other commodity in the world. Labor is just that and nothing else, it will be purchased at the prevailing rate and you can't blame the employers for wanting the best deal they can get. So bottom line is learn so you can earn.

Workers need to learn to unionize so they can earn what they are worth.

I got a $2 an hour raise just trying to unionize my employer. Co-workers were afraid I would be fired but I knew I could get another job paying what I was making.
