What's better, Beach House or Condo?  Reply with quote

I'm looking back on this question and thought some might be interested.

I would say that no matter where you have it, a part-time home somewhere is a solid investment in raising a family. Over the 20 years we owned our beach place I can't count the hours of quality family time we spent there, and when it was all said and done, it made me money instead of costing any.

Once my family was grown and moved away, the frequency went way down. That's when we sold the place and all the upkeep costs and headaches maintaining it when it was mostly unoccupied seemed like a better idea. Then we used part of the money to buy into a condo system.

Now when I look back after a few years of owning the condo and figure my $400 annual payment to spend a week plus using bonus time for any short junkets at around $35 a night for a 2 bedroom with kitchen condo is actually cheaper than what I was paying for the beach place in taxes and upkeep. Not only that, but now I can visit many different locations instead of just one.

I know I said the beach place didn't cost me anything, but I had to sell it to realize that income that offset the expenses over the years. Now that I'm retired, the monthly expense is what counts most.

Just something to think about.
