Now is the best time to invest in real estate, the best time to invest in anything is when there is when the market for it is down.
Other investments: Currencies, equities, futures, energy, solar, hydro, green industry in general, money market, CD, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs (mutual funds that trade like stock), Illiquid assets of private companies (such as on sharespost), start-up companies(venture cap/angel investor)...and tons and tons more.

The two appreciating assets are real estate and equitiies - they are long term investments for long term growth. The average return is substantially higher than inflation, so that your wealth can compound and grow. The income products are designed for wealth preservation - CDs, bonds, savings, MMF, annuiities - your money does not grow, it approximately offsets inflation and the principal is protected.

In my opinion invest money in real estate is the great option. It can also rise in value overtime and prove a good investment in the cash value of the investment property that you buy. That's why you need to be sure that you are ready to begin investing in real estate.

As I also said in another thread, in my opinion, the best real estate investments right now are the ones you can either buy and sell (flip) in the shortest time possible (i.e. short sales and REO), without blocking any of your money, or long term in a partnership situation to diversify your risk (some residential mixed with commercial property.) In either case, keep your cash and spread your risk.
