There are three basic ways to generate more income:
1. Find new customers
2. Getting existing customers to buy from you more often
3. Getting existing customers to buy in larger quantities
If you're selling products, services or both, then it's pretty easy to understand what your objectives are; however, if you make money from in-house online projects like
contextual ads
affiliate programs
text link ads
banner ads
etc.
then what exactly are your objectives? I suppose that you can try to sell ad spaces to new customers, get existing customers to buy more or buy in large quantities, but how about contextual ads? How about affiliate programs? How do you find new customers? SEO???

There are many people on the Internet that have their own online businesses and are always looking for ways to promote their websites. One of the most effective ways is article marketing. The goals are different depending on the project.
If you are trying to make money by participating in affiliate programs, generally your goal is to drive motivated buyers to a landing page (typically through PPC advertising) that has been optimized to convert them into a purchase.
If you want to participate in affiliate programs but drive traffic with SEO then you'll need to generate MUCH more content that users will find informative and useful when researching the product. You'll need the content to rank for lots of keyword phrases related to the product.
If you are getting paid by other companies to place banner ads on your site to advertise their products, your goal should be to drive more and more targetted traffic to your site so that you can charge more and more for ad placements.
If you are getting paid by a link broker to place text link or contextual links on your site pointing to other sites then those other companies typically care primarily about the link itself and the SEO benefits they provide. So your goal should be to increase the PageRank of those pages where you're selling links so that you can demand higher prices for the links. WARNING: Selling followed link placements on your site to companies whose sole goal is to manipulate the search engine results can get you penalized by Google. It's a violation of their guidelines.

I find these steps totally realistic and right! You may have larger expectations, but this is the way it works. You have to find out something to attract costumers, something they would like and come back another time to see if something new appeared. They would just look at your products at the beginning but when they will have a large variety of products they already seen before, the would feel confident to buy.

In SEO you target a keyword that is used from search engines to find the products or whatever services your selling you can be on page #1 that would be great getting the searchers enter your website and find what their looking for. Though the website must also be informative, attractive, trusted rather look like a professional website that don't look sucky. I really agree that content is king but together with SEO you would get the leads you are looking for.

Just be sure that the articles you are writing are original. You wont make as more money (or even be hired) if you don't write original content.

Although article writing is a good solution, it is very important to do some research on the right keywords for your product or company. Deep knowledge in copywriting is very important.
