Generally, it insures you in case a trip is canceled by a travel agency, so any money you paid as a deposit will be refunded. Or, it may cover you in case you have to cancel your trip. Travel insurance may cover health care costs in a foreign country, as well. It all depends on the individual policy.
I've never purchased travel insurance, but there are good reasons for some people.

If one has the lifestyle of traveling from one place to another, then travel insurance would be good. Should something go wrong, at least he is insured, and better than nothing, an insurance claim can be made.

travel insurance covered all uncertainties incurred during travelling. Travel insurance cover medical expenses, cancellation of flights, accident etc.
But careful about terms conditions of insurance companies when signing the insurance policy.
