Hey you guys im new to this site not to ask mainly for help but to learn from people my age or older about finances since im 22 and in college and I want to try my best to avoid the hardship period of my life the best I can. well im in college at university of North Texas majoring in chemistry and me and my girlfriend started a non- profit to help African children in Nigeria who are underprivileged in regards to school supplies. Our goal is to make better connections with people who know lots of people that would want to help with our cause but since we hadnt come very far in life yet we really dont know where to start. We have tried emailing companies, putting up posters around the university about our organization and even having meetings to where people even eat for free at our expense. The organization is registered with the IRS to show that it is a legitimate organization but we just dont know how to move forward with this project. If you all have any ideas or even want to donate money or school supplies for children ages 5-11 please let me know! I am open to all idea! Thanks in advance!

Interesting,
It is never easy to start a non profit organization, and even more difficult to generate donors, never mind volunteers to assist in your efforts. With a good cause like you describe, plus being registered as a 501 (c)(3) with IRS, what you need is a means in which to generate interest, and providing a free meal is a very expensive strategy.
Having been involved in the non profit fundraising indusstry for years, I have seen it all, and tried it all, and all I can say is I feel sorry for any company starting out in this recession when not only are donations way down, but volunteerism is also down due to the economic collapse. And now with latest tax hit on the wealthy talking about eliminating the tax deduction made to non profit organizations, it will only get worse.
What I have researched is an organization which is in itself a non profit organization, but more importantly, it helps other non profits and charities which offering many valuable community and family oriented benefits like Life, Health and RX Benefits which save an average family thousands while providing peace of mind, and most important, saving people money. This unique new concept also rewards volunteers which creates an amazing workd of mouth benefit which is self promoting since everyone wants and needs what we provide, peace of mind.
If you want to raise some serious money effortlessly, then you have to think outside of the box, and that is what People Helping People is all about. Although a Christian based organization, they serve and benefit everyone regardless if they are religious or not. Everyone wants to save money in a recession as severe as this one, and everyone needs what is provided all at no cost or obligation, so have your volunteers promote this concept and your fundraising worries are over.
Success to all,

I would suggest you find an established organization and contact them to find out some helpful resources that may guide you in the right direction. There are many organizations that have been down this road before that I'm sure would be happy to assist you.
