Agreed with you on that one. If you have an accountant friend, you can easily ask for tips and opinions with regards to your tax question, and they do tbis one relatively for free.
If you have a simple tax situation then doing your own taxes can be done rather easily. That being said many people who file their tax returns improperly, or use a service where tax preparers - not CPA's file their taxes end up getting into a costly situation where a mistake has been made and by the time it is realized money has been lost. Make sure that when filing your tax returns you take care as mistakes cost money, particularly if the IRS assesses penalties. It may be better to consult a professional.

It falls into the same category "should i do my own accounts".
If you can afford it and time is more valuable to you in other area then certainly. It doesn't have to be expensive either.
