Bank fees are getting outrageous, making credit unions look more and more attractive (in my opinion).
You shouldn't have to pay fees to use your own money.

I tried to verify this both by phone and internet. I did find a $5 waivable fee. Maybe you're talking about the additional $6.95 a month for Bill Pay.
They're so lucky I'm grandfathered in and paying nothing; otherwise, it'd be siennara.

The fee doesn't apply to customers with a minimum balance of $1,500 or those who make direct deposits of at least $500 a month, and those selecting online statements will get a $2 discount.

This is how you squeeze or squeeze out the poorer folks with low balances and little money coming in, say, like the unemployed?

[devil's advocate]You make it sound like a goal. Consequences of actions aren't always the reason for those actions ya know. Besides, are people being charged to use their money, or are they using their money and being charged? I'd say they are using their money and being charged, but that's not to say they are being charged because they are using their money. [/devil's advocate]

Agreed. You shouldn't have to spend money to use the money you've already earned.

You don't have to. You have choices, and one choice is to not put it in a bank that's going to charge those fees.
Plus, there's a subtle distinction that I think is worth exploring, and that is the difference between being charged to use your own money and using your own money and being charged. The former explains why whereas the latter doesn't. If I want to know if I'm going to be charged, the latter answers that question, but the latter doesn't explain why. If I want to know why I'm being charged, then the former explains it. The point boils down to motivation for being charged.
Let me put it another way. It's not your use of the money that sparks the charge. Suppose you put money in the bank and didn't use your money that you've earned. Isn't it still the case you're going to be charged? I think so, and that goes to show that it's not your use of the money that's bringing about the charge. How about the service they provide? A service that other banks and credit unions do not charge for.
Anyhoots, I'm just bored and arguing for no good reason.
