SEO is great, and I highly encourage you to learn about it (there are a lot of places to start learning), but don't fall into the trap of ONLY doing SEO.
It's getting harder and harder to manipulate SERPs and get yourself to the top, although it's still worth the effort.
More and more people are recommending content marketing as opposed to SEO these days. With content marketing you're telling your story and reaching out to people through many different media. Podcasting, YouTube videos, blogging, social media interactions... all of these things can be just as effective at getting people to your site as SEO, and they have the added bonus of helping form a relationship with potential customers.
Just something else to consider!

This is just a good example of an online strategy that I normally use, create a site full of content, around 500-1000 pages, then start article marketing, blog comments and forum posting.

Since your website is an online discussion forum, so gradually your web pages will be filled with fresh contents posted by members, covering the main keywords you have already specified, so there is not much to do about content addition. Your main effort should be on gathering some good packs of links from authority sources, blogs and directories.
If you can, take a look at websites which host links pointing to your colleagues' sites and if you can, listing your address on those pages can be a recommended approach. If there are some SE-friendly URL maker add-ons or plug-ins for your forum, attempt to use them because they will help your web pages get indexed better and faster by search engines.

Good suggestions from all and as everyone said, first focus on your website completely about the pages, content, design etc and if you feel the perfection then start SEO. In SEO choosing keyword on which you want to rank your site is very important. Use search engine keyword tool box and fix a few keywords or combinations which are highly searched on search engines related to your content. Then start link building on that keywords.
