Content is important, but sadly I think the world of websites is not about content nearly as much as it is about SEO and earning page-rank.
Sure content can learn to page-rank, but trust me when I say -- a lot of people (especially bloggers) are doing fairly questionable methods to get traffic and page-rank.

In creating a website that is going to be productive, one has to constantly keep that focus for the right goal. There must be creativity starting from the planning stages.
If it's a company or a business website, I suggest you hire a web designer that can customize a professional website rather than creating a website from free services. Also buy a good domain name that can best describe your business.

But having a beautiful website is not enough to earn money online, you have to market your business through various means such as email marketing, SEO, Article marketing, etc. just depends on your budget.

If you want to create a profitable website. First select the niche you want create a website, second step would be SEO.
SEO plays a big part in online business. If you can drive traffic to your websites and convert prospect costumers to buy your products.
