Hi, I'm a college student and I'm looking to get a credit card to build credit. Does anyone have any recommendations for something basic?

Not sure why you don't have piles of offers to pick from, my kids always did. As soon as they credit card companies find you on the college rolls they send out more offers than you can use, just pick the best deal.

I must have evaded them...I did get something in the mail from Chase. Is there anything I should look out for (example: hidden fees for a checking account)?

I would look around the forum or do a search.. I am sure you can also get one walking to class some day that comes with a free frisbee or t-shirt. Build your credit now and try to pay off your expenses each month if you can.
It will pay off for pretty much everything in the long run when you have good credit standing.

The interchange fee is the biggest hidden fee of them all. I've been working with http://www.unfaircreditcardfees.com to make sure people are aware that consumers who pay cash are getting the shaft because retailers have to build the interchange fee into the cost of the goods/services. (interchange is the fee visa and mastercard charge stores for credit card transactions)
Congress is currently working on legislation to require the credit card companies and banks disclose more information and ensure the language is clear. Until then, be very careful about annual fees and interest rate details. Good luck!

bankrate.com has a good credit card comparison. you can compare the different APRs, annual fees, etc. all on one page and I think they link right to the application pages too.

I would choose the one w/ the lowest interest rate possible. I'm out of college and still haven't opened a credit card, but for me personally this is good, b/c I have a bunch of friends who are in debt b/c of it. I guess the bottom line is to use it for emergencies, deduct it immediately from your checking (basically, only spend what you have and not money you haven't even made yet) and don't use it on frivolous things. You don't have to use a credit card all the time to build credit-- as long as you pay off what you owe on time every time, you'll build good credit. Good luck!
