I am on the web a lot and every time I do a search on work at home jobs, I always seem to get nothing but a business opportunity where much up front money is required.
One thing I tried was online surveys but this is what happened. First I would have to fill out a profile with every survey company. Then they would screen me with a long questionnaire to see if I qualify to take the survey that would pay out money. As you can see I am skeptical of things. I have also seen something called mystery shopper which would interest me but again I am skeptical.
Can you please help me sort this out. I can devote some time to adding extra money but I don't want any get rich quick scheme, scam, or being told I have to spend money just to read a booklet on how a program works.
Please offer any suggestions on how I can do some part time work making use of the internet. I am particularly interested in travel and if there is a way to leverage my extensive travel knowledge, that would be great but certainly any ideas are appreciated.

Online surveys may be fine. I once got a whopping $5 for doing one, but they're very particular on who they choose to do the surveys. Any job where you have to pay the employer money up front has got to be a SCAM. Unless you are the owner of the business and must put money into it, an employee no matter where they work from or who they work for should never have to pay first and get paid later. Beware and good luck in your search!

Let me give you something to think about. No matter what you chose to do online to make money, you need to learn about advertising and promotion or you will be doomed to failure. No matter how good the method you use will be, unless you get it in front of the right eyeballs and have something to move them to action, it will not make a dime. It happens all the time.
So why not start out learning about the fundamentals? Get into a good advertising service that will pay you to promote it and see how it goes. If you can't sell a good tool to other marketers that need it, how are you going to succeed at selling travel, or anything else that you decide on?

Why don't you try affiliate marketing? This is a very easy way to make money online with just a blog and some article writing. When you say that you need to pay money upfront for an opportunity it sounds like you are looking at MLM or network marketing companies. This is a legitimate way to make money also online but you have to do your reserach and make sure that the company is legit and has a long track record of success for others. I would stay away from startup MLM because you can't be sure if they will be around for a long time unless you beleive the product is very unique with a high demand and good pricing.
Personally I like affiliate marketing better than MLM. There are many affiliate programs now that offer residual income just like MLM. I still do MLM but it is not my main focus, but I still like it. I just find the other thing easier. If you are looking for an establihed MLM company online that is easy on your wallet I would check out SFI. You can remain a free member and still make money or upgrade for higher commission rates. They are one of the first online MLM's and have millions of affiliates worldwide.
I promote SFI with a service that builds my downline in five different affiliate programs at once and also SFI. I also make extra money with niche affiliate marketing and a little money from programs like Google Adsense and Ebay Auction Ads.
If you want to make money online you are going to need to have your own product or buy resell rights to one. If you don't want to do this you will have to go the other route which would be affiliate or network marketing where you don't own it but make a commission off of it. Both have their good and bad sides. Other alternatives would be drop shipping on Ebay or just publishing content and making Adsense income. All of these things work you just have to take action.

I make most of money today doing online surveys. The key is finding the right place. Most of the time there will be some sort of catch, but only a select few sites are legit. My personal favorite is Cashcrate. [edited]

You can honestly start your own niche websites or blogs based on your travels. Then after you start receiving traffic to these sites you can use affiliates such as airlines, hotels, or travel companies on those sites to make money.
Just so you know it does take some time and effort to build a website or blog, but if it something you enjoy writing about it is also fun.
The best way to make money online is to do something yourself. All the get-rich-quick-schemes online are only going to frustrate you.
