I want to start an online business site selling items I hand make. What do I need to do?
I make earrings, key chains, and figurines and would love to have my own website so that I can sell them. I've looked all over at host sites, and I'm just not sure how much freedom they would offer to edit and change my site at any time. Also, I'm not sure how to go about making my items available to order. Do I need some type of software? How do I manage it?

Most designers will charge you "ROUGHLY" $500 to set it all up and then $50 monthly for updates. A cheaper way to go is to go to sitepoint dot com and find someone to help you set it all up; and then do the maintenance yourself. Software would not be necessary if your website just links straight to your ebay storefront. You don't really need the website if you sell on ebay. Ebay items show up in google search very well.
I have a retired programmer buddy in New Jersey that does cheap web site setup, hosting, and design. Just let me know if you're leaning in that direction.

I would recommend you to gain more knowledge about e-commerce website which will help you to sell your goods online and also will allow you to receive online payment.

I think that's good advice. You really want to know a lot about this before you start spending money on it.
See Proof. You can make free money online.

You may even use a basic, uncomplicated type of website, not the one which is like big internet stores, using cookies and needing PHP programming. There are even free templates to use and they can be great for shopping projects too. Of course you still are expected to have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS to maintain your website manually.
The next step would be putting pictures of your products on your website, and then using an online payment processing system which is offered by third-party companies and you can use an affordable solution. The remaining point would be promoting your business online, through using SEO and other paid advertising solutions such as the PPC systems.

A small shopping cart website would be more than enough if the selling items are limited.

true, the best bet would be to have someone set up a site for you (you can have it cheap if you do some research on that) and then do the maintenance yourself.just wanted to add that when it comes to promoting your page online, you better go with a software to get your seo going. hiring soemone for these matters is a huge waste. i've been there. good luck!

Many good points mentioned above. Ensure your site is safe for all customers is also very important.
