You can take contribution from a Roth, penalty fee, but not the earnings. That said I think you should leave the Roth money for retirement.

example Single with a Modified AGI under 56,000 can take a full deduction but >56Kand <66K gets a partial deduction

If both kids are in school then DW should find a job. Does she know how close to the edge you both are?
As as far as the gym. You CANNOT afford it. Take the kids to the park.
