I think this is a good article. For a long time I have disliked the commercialization of Christmas. I understand that this is the period when retailers make up to 50% of their profits, but it bothers me that our culture is all about spending. Our economy is all about spending.
As a people we owe so much more money than what we currently have that I am not surprised at all at the current crisis. I clearly remember the president after September 11th, 2001 telling us to go out and spend to get the economy going again, yet how many politicians say build up your savings account?
I think we should focus on savings first. And when people get a comfortable cushion, then let them go out and spend. But then again, with the rate at which banks are failing, I don't know if I feel all too secure with saving all of my money in a bank.
