Thank you Tim! I hope that online job seekers will find this post useful. There are a lot of scam sites on the web and my mission is to help others seek out the legitimate ones.

I agree. Great list carla_easley.
Just to add: Everyone should beware of data entry opportunities and other opportunities that try to charge an up front fee. Legitimate opportunities are free to apply for.
Uhaul also hires for work at home customer service from time to time.
Other legitimate forms of working from your home are; Virtual Assistants, writers, and consultants. Although you need to have some sort of background with these, they can be quite profitable as you can do this from the convenience of your home, and not have much expenses involved.

Great suggestion Gary.
Technical writing is also a growing work at home area.
You can also look at the Work at home portals such as

The above portal has realtime listing of 100s of legitimate work at home job opportunities from various sources.

I've been home based for the past 25 years.
One big difference in my work is that I get a lot of my sales by leaving my home office and calling on clients and prospects face-to-face. And, I've expanded my service area to much of SW Louisiana, with a monthly overnight sales trip to the Houston metro market. In fact, I've already booked my hotel for the 4th and 5th of October.
My family's sole income is generated from my Kaeser & Blair dealership. I've been associated with them since 1993, selling custom-printed promotional advertising products to a wide range of business, industry, and government buyers.
Promotional Advertising is one career field that most high school and even college career counselors would never think to suggest. But, it's been a great opportunity for providing for my family.
It's certainly not for everyone. But to be honest, most of the home businesses that promise anyone can do it, rarely deliver any serious replacement income.
Commission sales isn't for everyone. It was a difficult transition going from a guaranteed paycheck to commissions that varied from week to week, with no guarantees. But, it was definitely worth it for us in the long term.
And it also has the benefit of us having our own business, with no possibility of corporate downsizing, company bankruptcy, or the other common reasons for employees finding a pink slip in their pay envelope.
If those searching for home-based income approach the possibilities with their options wide open, there are more non-job sources for income than most would have considered.
My business may not be right for you, but if you find the right option for self-employment you may never have to consider a job again for the rest of your lives.
