Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or keyword phrase is found in your page content amidst all the other content. For example, if you have a Web page with exactly 100 words on it including all headlines, captions, alt text, and advertising, and you have a keyword phrase that is on the page 3 times, your keyword density is 3%:

I've also heard keyword density should be no more than 5%, and I try to keep it below that.

When you begin paying attention to things like keyword density, your articles and content begins to look like spam. Just submit content that optimizes the keyword in a natural way. Google is getting smarter and smarter about what is quality and what isn't. Create your content for the readers and not for google and other search engines.

Well said my friend, however it's only partially true. If you are truly a professional in SEO, you know that density is very important. You also would know that Googs is constantly changing their algorithm throwing your "typical" numbers completely off. My suggestion is... Try your best to get to 2-3% if you can make it sound natural. Don't force it. If you have to force the words and it sounds un-natural don't do it. Not only is it bad for SEO, but people are not dumb. They can see when your writing to specifically promote something. Un-natural keyword density is very spammy sounding, and your typical savvy person will ignore it.
