Is there anyone making money from web directories, I want to create some and I was wondering if it is possible to make more than $1000 from them. Am thinking of starting around 10 but I wonder how I will make them achieve at least pr3 and above.

Google is not supporting paid links, so starting paid directories cannot make you money in my opinion.

You can make money with web directories but it has to be very popular in google to get the amount you mentioned like good pagerank, backlinks etc.

It's still possible to make money form web directories but first you need to get traffic first. Most people has a lot of Adsense and affiliate marketing ads thinking these things can lure people to check out their directories. The best way to get traffic is by providing relevant and important information. Avoid making your directories a link farm, only accept high quality sites.

@Branna, please go ahead and make the directories, many people still use them since they are great for permanent links, I have a friend with a few directories making atleast $600 monthly.

You can really earn a lot of money from opening your own directory. The payment can either be a one-time-fee or a recurring payment depending on they way set up your directory. The amount of money you can earn depends on various factors, such as:
1. Design
2. Google Page Rank
3. Traffic

Back in the day you could make good money as a directory owner but it has become a lot harder. The sheer number of directories makes competition tough, plus Google has cracked down on what it considers link farms, making them far less effective.
I think the key is to start with a domain that already has some Pagerank, keep it niche specific so it could be considered a valuable resource and not just a link farm, and manually approve sites to keep the crap out.

Most of the SEO experts almost spend their lives working on Google and a very few other sites to get a higher ranking on them. No wonder Google has a giant's share in the search engines popularity.
