IT Support Questions  Reply with quote

Hi all,

I've been doing some household network items around the house and have a few IT questions.

Just bought the Sony bdp790s BluRay Media Player (dual processor & media apps). I"ve got a wireless N router (300mbps); and so do I need to run it to Cat6 cable or is that just a waste of time/money? Any advantage at all being wired (streaming Netflix)?

Another question I have is if/when I do run cat6 to every room, keystone jacks, what should I do with the router end of the cables at the center of the house? I've seen cables all tied together coming out of the wall with rj45 males crimped on (to router); but that's a bit messy as far home resale appeal: Would you use an in-wall patch panel (keystone), female rj45 on both ends? Just worried about signal quality and I have no idea as to what's proper.

Thanks in Advance,
E

What's funny is that I wanted to stream netflix last year for the purpose of watching movies. I ran category 5e cable which is sufficient for 1000 gbps, but realized afterwards that I could stream wirelessly from my router. If you blueray player has wireless capabilities then just simply navigate on your blue ray player and add your home wireless network to it and add the WEP or security key to it. Make sure the router is in the same room as the tv your streaming to for best results. Even though they state that your range is 100ft from router at 11mbps, I wouldn't take a chance. I tried Netflix for 6 months and didn't like it because half of the movies I wanted to watch they didn't have in their library.

As for 6E wiring, I wouldn't bother because everything is going wireless. Much cleaner! Smile I do networking at a major University.

litteroc,

Hello and thanks for the feedback. What did you end up doing as far as your television programming? We've been using cable along with Netflix dvds by mail for a few years now, and thought that the streaming would be more bang for the buck. It turns out that they don't stream the same movies that they mail by dvd. Ever tried the Sony Entertainment Network? Vudu Plus? Amazon?

I've been reading for years that wifi 300mbps and 1ghtz wired is a pipe dream, simply because the equipment does not yet exist to make it useful. My cable internet is throttled to 3 to 6 mbps; and so I guess that I'll just stay with the WIFI.

The cable company had wrapped the outside walls of the house with RG6 coax many years ago, and so I removed all of that today and ran new quad shield RG6 through the attic into all of the wall phone jacks. I ran the cat6 with it, just because I had a enough of it here already. I'll finish up tomorrow with a keystone patch panel for the router; just to make it all look proper.

Thanks again,
E

To be honest, I have stuck with regular cable programming and don't have a lot of time during the summer to watch tv. I do have free NFL network for a year, so I'm looking forward to the season. I'll venture back into online streaming this winter when there's nothing to do.

I need to correct some info I gave you and I forgot to ask you a couple of questions that would make a difference. So you stated that your router is is an 802.11n which provides 270Mbps at a range of about a 100ft correct? I had stated 11mbps, but that's only if your running 802.11b. My first question would be what frequency does the router put out, is it 2.4 GHZ or 5GHZ? and is it a dual band or single band router? Lastly, what ieee is the blueray player capable of with it's wireless card. This could be the key.
