I'm the odd ball in this group.

My wife and I have always had seperate accounts and a his/hers/ours relationship with money. 16yrs and no problems. I pay all the bills in the house and she gives me a check for her contribution to the household. She pays for most of my daughter's activities and we both have seperate savings accounts and retirement accounts. Our income disparity is really large. I make most of the income. Works for us..

Before I was widowed three years ago, husband and I were married blissfully 33 years 55 days. Our system was pretty traditional. He worked. I took care of house, child, aged parents.

His job was to make the money.
My job was to hold on to the money and control expenses.

Always had joint checking, joint everything. He did not think he could have stoked as much money away without me running the home front situation. He said he did not think he could afford to have me work because then many many other things and services would have to be bought. Especially elder care and child care.

I am 58 and have a few friends in traditional marriages and joint finances, but not as many as you used to see. Even some older friends who have given up rowing the financial boat together, but are not unhappy enough with the situation to do anything about it. Complete financial transparency is a marker of a happy healthy marriage. Anything less, is well....less.
