I would (and do) put it all in the Fidelity FUSVX, that's their SP500 Index Fund. You have until April 15 to max your 2012 contribution, then it goes to 2013.
quote: Also, is an IRA a legitimate vessel for college savings? Or should I look into the 529 savings accounts?
Our youngest child graduated from college in 1995 - and the 529 was invented in 1996, so I have no experience. And that tends to be a problem with Congressional plans, ie, they seldom last thru an 18-yr 'kid cycle'. We used our Taxable Account - it is a SP500 Fund with a no-load company, grows tax deferred, subject to 15% cap gains tax on profit when we sell some, the balance goes tax-free to heirs. It has averaged 11%/yr for the past 35 years, it makes a good fallback EF - also good for buying houses, rentals, cars, etc.
