Credit Card "Guaranty" vs. "actual charge&quo  Reply with quote

First time this has happened.

I live in the U.S. I just booked a hotel in Amsterdam for next year. On the hotel's confirmation letter to me, they said that "this was not a payment, just a guarantee, and that I pay at time of arrival." [BTW, this is a 4-star hotel.]

As I checked my B of A Visa online today, I note there is a "pending" charge of what it seems 1 night's stay at this hotel. Other hotels in the past that required a credit card guarantee have NEVER charged me before arrival.

What does this mean? I know in past experience, that "pending" turns into an actual charge.

Wassup with this?

The hotel is supposedly one of the most reputable ones.

Actually, this is done all the time. You probably just never noticed it before because the "pending" charge was either reversed and cleared on your cancellation or turned into an actual charge upon your check-in. Hotels always block at least one night's credit on your account when you reserve a room with a reservation guarantee. I see the only difference here is that it was done so far ahead; normally it's done on the day of arrival or maybe a day or so ahead. At least, that's been my travel experience, which I admit, is far out-of-date.

"Pending" doesn't necessarily turn into an actual charge, and by mistake if it does, just call the credit card servicing company to have it reversed. It wouldn't hurt to check it online a couple times between now and when you go.

There's nothing underhanded going on here. Wink
