Get the most out of your money
*Take advantage of any student discounts.
*Get to know how to use the library at the earliest opportunity.
*Use the internet to buy and sell on secure sites.
*Opt for the best value telephone landline provider, if you need one.
*Keep an eye open for the best mobile package.
*Buy essential books and equipment second-hand.
*Shop in local markets, charity shops and the students' union.
*Register with uk.freecycle.org and use it both when you're looking for items, and when you have belongings you no longer need.
*Be careful with heating and lighting.
*Try and buy in bulk if living in a student house, and share costs with your housemates.
*Share to save whenever you can, particularly on transport.
*Walk or cycle during the day rather than take public transport.
*Check to see if your belongings can be covered by your family insurance.

Just a couple more
get renters insurance
don't get un-needed credit cards
don't run up credit card bills that you can't pay in full every month
lock up your stuff and bicycles always
trust your gut feelings about anyone who feels sketchy/bothersome/dangerous

I think those are all great ideas, but one of the most dangerous things we see college kids doing today is how they treat their student loans. A lot of kids are going to big expensive schools and having federal student loans or even worse private student loans foot 100% of the bill because they don't know any better.
Just because the government gives you a loan doesn't mean that you qualify to borrow that money in the sense of financial security. When you get out of college and need to star making the payments it can be a real nightmare of what kind of debt you are experiencing. I have seen first had the amount of people who get denied for a home loan because they have to much student debt.
Borrow responsibly and start paying on them before you graduate (the same month you take the loan out is when you should begin paying really).

great tips but is rental insurance really necessary? what do i need it for mainly? what are the risks of not having it!!?

As an owner of rental property and landlord, I require rental insurance for all tenants. Rental insurance is protection for myself and the tenant in case of flood, fire or other act of God, where the tenants personal items are protected should these acts happen.
The other thing is I work for the University of MInnesota and you wouldn't believe the high rise apartment buildings popping up all over the place where students can now pay big bucks to have pools, big rooms with better appliances I have in my home, work out facilities, etc.... This is what the gov't is subsidizing with Federal student loans and you wonder why loaning money to students and personally guarenteeing loans to students that have no income is such a stupid idea.

When Your not using your Microwave unplug it to save money... Unplug anything that uses power without being in use such as things that display lights or clocks to save money on power..
Power down your refrigerator when you don't have anything inside of it..
Be as Resourceful as possible..

I commonly think before i spend. usually on big ticket items. if not you should start earning a side income, part time or not. I used this article @ http://www.expertfrugal.com/startup-business-ideas/ to generate my current side income idea.

Hi, those are all important and helpful tips for students. As for me, I'm encouraging students and adults to save and purchase an asset such as house and lot, insurances, trust funds something that you could have for future use.
