What is the catch? |

So I found a stock with this ticker PTI.
It seems the graph periodically shoots up super high and then climbs back down. Wouldn't it be a good investment to put say like 5% of my bankroll into this stock and watch it shoot up to 500 times what it was and then quickly sell it?
What is the catch? The stock market can't be that easy.

From December 30 to January 8 the stat vol said over 20k which I think is the number of stocks being traded.
How do I tell how many stocks are currently held at a specific time?

Why is this stock shooting up in the first place? I mean, does the market really think it is that valuable? Who in their right mind is going to buy the stock when it is up a lot. It is kind of obvious they are going to lose a whole bunch of money. Unless it is a pump and dump scheme I can't think of any other reason.

I noticed something really cool. In the Yahoo graph in a 3 month period the stock price on Dec 2 at $0.20 went up to $40.60 on Dec 3 which is huge. During that time from Dec 3 to Dec 29 no trading was done except on Dec 9 where it plummeted to $0.19 where 1.44 million stocks were traded. The next day it shot up again. Then on Dec 30 something extraordinary happened. The stock shot up to $23,200. During that time there was a selling of about 100k-200k stocks before it plummeted again.
The first shoot up did not affect anyone however, the second time it shot up must have triggered some poor souls to buy and lose quite a bit of money. The sellers were probably really happy since they made bank.
