Balance Transfer gone wrong! What are my options?  Reply with quote

I did a Balance transfer and the Loan Officer put 1 wrong number (it needed to be a "2" and he put a 3") as the account number, and the old credit card company cashed the check. I waited and waited for the credit to appear on the old account, but it never did. Well I called the old credit card company, and they said they have no record of the check…but it also shows that they cashed it! Well they are doing research which might take a month. Well, now a representative from the new credit card company suggested "while you wait, why don’t I just pay off the credit card balance with the credit you have available on the account." I said “sure”. She said she would overnight the payment. Then she comes back and says that the old cc company's postal address is wrong and asks me to call them and confirm the address. So I did, and it was correct! Not sure where she saw it was "wrong".

Well she was out for a few days and said she finally mailed the check “overnight” on Friday, but since there was no one to sign for it, on the weekend, it needed to go via regular postal mail, which will take 7-10 days. I don’t understand why she didn’t wait until Monday (yesterday) to send it out overnight and then it would’ve been there today (Tuesday, 3MAR). So now I need to wait 7-10 days for that check to get to the old bank and then another 2-3 business days for it to post!

All while the old credit card company still has this huge balance and now is showing a “missed payment” because I haven’t touched this since the investigation has begun. I was told that everything would be "frozen" (due dates, interest etc.) but online it doesn't show that. I was assured by the rep of the old cc company not to worry.-- This will in return hit my credit report. Haven’t had a missed payment in years.

Meanwhile, a few weeks ago I contacted the loan officer (who dropped off the face of the earth once he made his mistake) to see if he can at least get me 0% APR for a year. He came back and said “we don’t have any cards that do that, sorry”. Well, I guess I am not talking about cards even, but even just eliminate the interest on my card for a year, or transfer the balance into a normal "personal loan" with 0% interest.. It can’t be that hard, can it?

It’s been nothing but a stressful mess since January. Do I have any options? How common is this? Isn't there a "check and balance" to have another set of eyes confirm the correct numbers before things are processed?

I have a fairly good credit score and I am young, so I am able to bounce back from this, but it’s still been pretty stressful.

Thank you for your help! Let me know if you need clarity.

Are these the same two credit cards that you had in 2013? Or did you open some new ones? Do you still have the car payments?

In situations like yours calling the customer support is a must, the quicker you do this, the bigger are chances to cancel the transaction. I had a similar issue with Green Dot, but due to these contacts green-dot-moneypak.pissedconsumer.com I managed to cope with it.

In case of wrong transfer, inform your bank immediately that you have transferred the money to the wrong beneficiary account, call the customer care number. Make a note of the transaction's date and time, as well as your account number and the account to which the funds were mistakenly transferred.
