i think they do help each other out as Alexa is a site that links tons of other sites plus it is probably friendly for the spider to crawl so i am sure it helps to get going on alexa but don't take those numbers to the bank.

I agree with other comments.
Alexa is a reasonable gauge of a sites importance.
If I come across a new directory, or a site I am thinking of advertising on. I often pull up its Alexa rank to get a feel for its standing.
