A 301 redirect is a rule that we set within our HT access file that ensures that users are redirected to the correct page.

in addition it also helps the search engines understand that the page has been removed!

Now coming to your question!

Most people think that performing 301 redirects will result in your site being penalized or it may hurt SEO but that is definitely not the case.

However in saying that, the answer to this question can hinge somewhat meaning it can sway either way depending upon user intent!

I have some notes for you and i just want you to read through these notes so that you can understand exactly what i mean by user intent!

If a user simply moves the page or changes the sites structure then it will not hurt your sites SEO.

However you will see a loss in performance if you purposely try to funnel link equity,in other words 301 redirecting pages with link equity across to other pages in an effort to boost those pages within the search results, when done will result in the complete opposite!

In other words if you are purposely trying to funnel link equity to a particular page and increase its positioning int the search results then my friend your page’s rank is going to plummet because Google is smarter than all webmasters!

And not only will it drop it will stay there.if you are performing a 301 redirect from toxic links or a penalized domain the same outcome is likely ( a loss in performance).

So if you are one of those people who are performing 301 redirects just because you have simply moved a page because you don’t want people to see a 404 error then you have absolutely nothing to worry about!
