Investing Late  Reply with quote

We have family who had no retirement savings. They sold their home to get out of mortgage payments, and we've allowed them to move onto our property for a year in a camper while in between homes. Our area has a $250k median home price, and we think they may have about $150k tops but now have a $40k debt for a new camper and maybe owe $20k on a vehicle. They just formally retired from their jobs and are looking for what to do with the proceeds from the sale of their home. I feel like they'll need this for the next home they buy, which will need to be a cheaper location, especially since they now only have social security as income. Luckily we have cheaper areas around us. Once they determine what they need to hold back for the next home, what is the best place to put any remaining funds? I thought a Roth with catch-up contributions. They are late 60s, early 70s, and can't afford too much risk at this point. They spoke with an investment company who said they could expect 5% to 8% tops. Is that because of the market? One of my accts earned 18% last year, but how could they find something performing that well and being low risk? Thank you in advance for any help.

It's a challenging ask in today's economy. With no risk, there is little reward in a environment trending toward negative interest rates. I'd suggest that they avoid stocks, as the stock market won't be doing as well without FED magic money injections. There are some amazing investment opportunities in the crypto world, but the risk is very high, so that's probably not for them. Having a chunk to invest will provide more options, so that is good, the 5% to 8% isn't bad for no risk.
