Ebay-Buy from retailers sell on ebay?  Reply with quote

What does it take to be a success with Ebay? There is a huge amount of sellers who seem to have cornered the market. So is there still room to make money on Ebay? Would buying things 50% off at a local store, and then selling them for 25% off work? Basically what i am asking is if it is possible to make money on Ebay now that it is hugely saturated.

I think it will always be possible to make money on e-bay. I would say give it a go if you can find stuff for 50% off. Just don't invest too much in the beginning. Use what you profit from your first sales to buy more stuff and so on.

I sell on eBay occasionally. I've sold handmade jewelry (supplementing and advertising a tiny web business), handmade polymer clay beads, Scout collectibles, and some of my old dolls.

My findings:
* Most people who shop eBay are looking for deep discounts. They're not looking to buy at fair prices. They can already get 25% off of goods at their local stores.
* Jewelry is extremly competitive. Too many people chasing after too few buyers, and competing with top-name designer brands. A few people want unique hand-crafted jewelry, and I can find them more easily with my website and newsletter.
* Some handcrafted polymer clay beads are hot sellers -- mostly the cute figural beads (puppies, piggies, holiday themes, etc.). I can sell a half-dozen of these for $10-$20. However, they take hours to make. It's a paying hobby, really.
* Collectibles are a hotter market because for some things, eBay is the easiest and most accessible place to find items for your collections, especially vintage items. You have to have a good source of collectibles (public auctions, estate sales, etc.), and stick to the ones you know best. Don't just grab anything that looks collectible at garage sales and expect it to sell on eBay. Do your research first. Vintage Barbies, for example, are good sellers if they're in good shape, especially if they come with original costume and box (mine went for $80 last Christmas).
* Electronics, music, and DVDs are the best categories in which to get ripped off. These are the categories where you'll find people fencing stolen items (I work on a university campus where it's well known that people go "shopping" in the library and student center for electronics that no one is watching, and within the day they're up on eBay), selling homemade copies of CDs and DVDs, all kinds of TOS violations.

If you're going to sell on eBay, do your research first. Read all the material that eBay offers, including their Terms of Service. Get on the discussion boards for the categories you're interested in and read what people have to say and get your question answered. Follow auctions for the types of items you're interested in and see which items sell and for how much. Think about items that you can sell that are hard for people to find anywhere else, things they'd turn to eBay to find. Then look for a niche that you could fit into.

Yes you can make a living on Ebay. Know your costs to determine your true profit though. I know of quite a few Ebay sellers that were only making very small profit on big ticket, in-demand items becuase the competition was so tight.

Ebay has a very quick responce to normalize prices- very soon after you find a great deal the Ebay close prices will shift to match it.

Possible, but hard, you need to find a good product to sell. Some product still sell very well on it. Find a good wholeseller, and sell.

I looked into starting business on Ebay. Look for a company that is a wholesale dropshipper. The products are ,of course, wholesale priced. All you need to do is pay a small fee for access and advertise and sell the product. The company will ship the package with your name on it. I don't have the name of the company in my head. Email or let me know and I'll get the name for you.
The Rich Jerk also sells a ebook that lists all you need to know.
Let me know.
