Participating online discussion forums drive lots of traffic to my website.
I am spending daily 2 hour for forum posting.
Can you describe your experience in forum posting?

Online forums and discussion groups can be a great way to build
traffic and links. But I try to limit it to about 30 minutes a day. Its
too easy for me to spend the whole day in forums and get nothing
else done.
The downside to relying solely on forums is that if you don't make
fresh posts your traffic will soon dry up. I focus on creating new
pages and new sites that will bring traffic from other sources too,
particularly from relevant links and the search engines. That way, if
I take a few days off the traffic will still keep coming.
I'd rather not have to worry about driving to traffic to my sites manually.
Its easier to set it up so you can sit back and let it run on autopilot for
awhile.

I also can get carried away with forum posting. I belong to many different forums, and I end up spending too much time reading and responding to posts...especially if I find a site with a lot of people that are interesting in the same things as me.

Some forums have generated traffic. Others have not. I use a stats program to look at where the traffic is coming from. On forums where there is a lot of cross-discussion and a well-established community, I notice that people will follow my links to see what's on my page. On forums where people post mostly to be seen, which includes some personal finance forums as well as political forums, people are a lot less likely to follow links in other people's signatures.
Also, link that looks like it's trying to sell you something is less likely to get clicked than one that looks like an interesting personal blog or website, at least in my experience. Others may have had different results.

Yes, it's quite easy to get traffic to your sites from
forums, yet I think it's a better idea to focus on
other sources for the long term...
I love forum traffic as they are usually very interested
in my topic --> are very targeted. However I found
that search engine traffic (wether organic or PPC) is
by far the best converting one (unless you get a
known and respected marketer to send the link to
your site to their list).
I think that forum traffic is excellent for Adsense,
but if you're selling something or if you're promoting
an affiliate product and you aren't very known and
respected in a certain community, very few people
will actually buy.
You see, people come to forums to get free information.
They post question after question to get what they could
have gotten from an ebook. Although they know the
info is there, they don't want to pay for it and rather go
to forums...
But they are really not to blame as there's so many scams
and useless ebooks out there, not to mention that they
are almost 99% many times overpriced! In recent months,
I'm yet to find an ebook that is actually worth every single
penny I invested in it. Almost everything is crap, so that's
why I don't blame the forum people for not converting so
well for such things.
But over all, I'd say that forum traffic is a great piece of
the sum of all sources of traffic (there should be many!).
The key to forum traffic is to post very relevant, quality and
sometimes a bit controversial posts so that you get a lot
of replies (your post gets on top every time someone
replies). That way you don't have to post very frequently to
each forum.
It is also a good idea to first write your post in notepad (
or better Word and spell check it) and then post the same
article to as many forums as you can find. But there's a
catch. I suggest you try to make every article unique for
each forum.
That way the forum owner will be pleased as you post
unique content that the search engines love and you will
also benefit as many people circle many forums and if they
find the same post on many of them you start getting
negative replies like: "Yeah, you posted this same article on
other forums as well. What, are you trying to only get free
traffic or what?" and the like. I've seen many such posts and
it makes the author look like they don't really care and people
don't visit their web sites that often.

about 95% of the traffic to my website come from forums.
forum is the main source of traffic.

Yes, forum posting is a great way to generate traffic. You need to be careful though. What I mean by this is. Don't get sucked in. Very easy. If your going to post. Of course, make sure it's relevant. Send only about 30 minutes a day...only! Share your knowledge. If you help others, and create value. You will generate a huge amount of traffic.

I find that forum traffic is good for building a list. I make a few sales, but most of the time I will offer a free product for signing up for my list. It can take a lot of time to post to forums, but you can learn alot at the same time.

If forum posting is your only source of traffic thats not good at all. As forum traffic are not very targeted traffic, they are just random traffic, from other readers curious of what the poster website is. I usually try to get my traffic as many different places as possible like adword, links, banners, directories, search engine, and etc..
My point is don't focus on one source of traffic, get from many. Also posting on forum can be very time consuming, as it takes time to read them and to post a good reply. And sometimes you enconter some very good post, that you spend 40 minutes reading it.

Does posting to Forums also influence the rating of your site in the search engines or has it no or very little influence?
Has anyone of the frequent forum posters noticed any difference?

I get quite a bit of traffic from forum posting but there's no way that I rely on it. I limit the amount of time spent online as it can just waste so much time.
I get a lot of traffic from writing articles and I have also bought traffic from 'get paid to sites' which has been great. The last one I did with them I got 11 people signing up to a subsription website that I'm a member of.
Also linking to other sites has been helpful.

It depends if the forum is crawlable by the search engines. If it is then it can effect your page rank therefore effecting your placement on say google. I can't remember what types of forums are crawlable though. You can tell if you search for something on google and one of the results takes you right to a forum thread.
